American transcendentalism was a highly influential movement in philosophy and literature that flourished during the first half of the nineteenth century and included such luminaries as Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry David Thoreau. For the transcendentalists, the soul of each individual was identical to the soul of the world and contained all that the world contained.
The sensitive nature photographs by Walter H. James (1873-1963) and his granddaughter, Jane English, in the American Transcendental 2008 wall calendar perfectly capture this movement. The photographs are accompanied by gems of wisdom from the writings of Emerson, Fuller, Thoreau and other American Transcendentalists. The calendar design, text choices and background photographs are by Jane English.
