330,000 Trees Planted since 2008
We offset our carbon footprint and resource usage by planting trees through Trees for the Future (TREES). TREES is a nonprofit agroforestry resource center that helps communities in Central America, Africa, and Asia restore tree cover to their lands. TREES has planted 93 million trees since 1989; by the end of 2013, Amber Lotus will have funded the planting of at least 330,000 trees. In addition to removing CO2 from the atmosphere, these trees help restore degraded land, reverse deforestation, improve soil quality, and augment local standards of living (www.treesforthefuture.org).
We planted 120,000 trees in 2013 to offset the resource usage and carbon footprint associated with the production of our 2013 product line (which includes our 2014 calendars). This is almost 43 times the estimated 2,791 trees used to produce these products. One of the advantages of planting trees as an offset strategy is that they remove CO2 from the atmosphere on an ongoing basis. TREES estimates that the 330,000 trees we have planted since 2008 will remove 8,250 tons of CO2 from the atmosphere annually, verses the estimated 479 tons of CO2 generated by our 2013 production activities. Amber Lotus is proud to be carbon negative. These benefits are summarized in the table below.
We further offset our carbon footprint and resource usage by partnering with NativeEnergy to help finance construction of Native American, family farm, and community-based renewable-energy and carbon-reduction projects. By the end of 2013 we will have offset more than 1,200 tons of CO2 through our contributions to NativeEnergy (www.nativeenergy.com)
Our 2014 wall calendars are printed on Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) Certified Mixed Source Paper, which contains 18% recycled content and is processed chlorine free. The FSC label ensures that the wood used to produce the paper comes from well-managed forests, recycled materials, and/or controlled wood from noncontroversial sources. Established in 1993, FSC is an international not-for-profit organization that promotes responsible management of the world's forests by developing standards and providing independent certification and labeling of forest products (www.fsc.org).
Printing Our Products
We print all our products with Sung In Printing, a subsidiary of Pacom AAP, Inc., in South Korea. Pacom is a global company that provides one-stop total printing solutions. Pacom offers optional printing services around the world by combining traditional craftsmanship, cutting-edge technology, and industry savvy. Pacom is the largest print exporter in South Korea. We have used Sung In as our exclusive calendar printer for more than 15 years. Our initial decision to work with Sung In was driven by two factors. First, because we were founded by a Tibetan Buddhist organization, we did not want to use a printer in China; second, Sung In is an experienced calendar printer that holds to exceptional quality and ethical standards. Sung In Printing is an excellent partner. We feel fortunate and are confident in their quality of craftsmanship.
Sung In's Standards of Excellence
