Earth Day 2022 — Invest In Our Planet

Earth Day is an annual event on April 22 to demonstrate support for environmental protection. First held on April 22, 1970, it now includes a wide range of events coordinated globally by EarthDay.org including 1 billion people in more than 193 countries. The official theme for 2022 is Invest In Our Planet.

We love these suggestions from Mindful for practicing mindfulness in nature and letting your heart connect to the nature that’s around you:

1) First, tap into everyday awe — that sense of wonder and inspiration that reminds us that we’re connected to things much larger than ourselves. “Approach your surroundings with fresh eyes, as if you’re seeing them for the first time. Otherwise ordinary features — a bird singing, the color of the sky — may be transformed into something more extraordinary,” writes Juliana Breines.

2) Then, let your five senses guide you. If the nature where you live feels same-y, try engaging your hearing, smell, sight, taste, or touch. Just like our own inner experience, our outer experience of nature is always shifting, and we can get curious about that. “How does the nature around you look today? How is it different from yesterday, or a season ago?” asks Mindful associate editor Ava Whitney-Coulter.

3) Next, take a walk…with compassion. This practice gets to the heart of an emotion that’s widespread these days: climate anxiety. Compassion is what can help us work with this our anxiety; it also empowers us to effect positive change through wisdom and loving-kindness. “Instead of remaining caught up in reactivity, anger, and fear, it takes effort and training to find a balance between accepting what we cannot change and seeking out where to actively put our effort,” writes Mark Bertin.
