May Is National Bike Month
May is National Bike Month, which celebrates the use of bikes as transportation and recreation and highlights its importance to our well-being. The National Bike Challenge also starts in May and continues until September. Bike to Work Week in 2023 will be from May 15-21, with Bike to Work Day on May 19. In addition, the League launched National Ride A Bike Day, which is held on the first Sunday of every May. This year, it will be on May 7, 2023.
Biking is a great way to travel, especially for trips under two miles. Did you know that 40% of all trips in the US fall under this category? With the League of American Bicyclists' "Drive Less, Bike More" campaign, people are encouraged to use their bikes for more transportation trips, such as commuting, running errands, and grocery shopping. By swapping short car trips for bike trips, individuals can positively impact their health, family's health, the environment, and their wallets.
The campaign exceeded its goal of turning 1 million car trips into 1 million bike trips in 2021, with a grand total of 1.5 million miles ridden by bike and 167,337 lbs of CO2 spared. In 2022, the campaign prevented nearly 250,000 lbs of CO2 emissions and rode over 1.6 million miles. The League of American Bicyclists encourages individuals to participate in the "Drive Less, Bike More" campaign, as it is a fun way to travel, helps the environment, promotes good health, and contributes to building bicycle-friendly communities.
